Adams family tree database

My earliest known Adams ancestor is Eli Adams.
Eli was born in April between 1834-1836. His place of birth has been given as either Kentucky or Virginia (now West Virginia). In the 1900 Wayne Co., WV census for Eli's daughter, Margarett, she lists Ohio as the place of birth for Eli.

Place of birth per census records:
1860 ~ Virginia (now West Virginia)
1870 ~ Kentucky
1880 ~ Kentucky
1900 ~ West Virginia
1910 ~ West Virginia

Eli's father is sometimes listed as Thomas. I haven't been able to find the source of this information.

I have found no record of Eli in Kentucky. I've searched 1850 census records for Kentucky and Virginia, as well as other states, but I have not been able to place Eli in his youth.

The earliest I can place him is in Wayne County, Virginia (now West Virginia) on Apr 14, 1857, as attributed in his daughter, Margarett's, birth entry.

The latest I can place Eli is July 23, 1910. Eli was involved in a land deal with his grandson, William Napier, in Wayne County, WV.

Eli may have died before December 21, 1911. Eli's wife, Ellender, was involved in a land deal with their grandson, Jeff Adams and a Jesie Adams(could be a typo, and the name might read Josie, which was Jeff's wife). Ellender was the sole grantee, or buyer, which could point to Eli already being dead.

Eli can be found in the following census records:
1860 Wayne County, Virginia (now West Virginia)
1870 Wayne County, West Virginia
1880 Wayne County, West Virginia
1900 Wayne County, West Virginia
1910 Wayne County, West Virginia

Eli was married to Ellender "Nellie" Watts (b.Jul 04, 1837-d.Nov 16, 1927), the daughter of Daniel Jackson Watts and Margaret "Peggy" Adkins. Census records indicate Eli Adams and Ellender Watts were married sometime between 1850-1854.

They had nine known children, though census indicates Ellender was the mother of eleven.

Eli and Ellender had the following children:
1.Margarett Elizabeth Adams

Eli was a juror during the trial of Laban T. Walker. On November 28, 1879, Walker, having been found guilty, was executed in Wayne County, West Virginia, that county's first and last execution. Read Laban Walker's sentencing report here.

Eli's occupation was as a farmer.

1. Parents and complete birth information for Eli Adams. He was born about Apr 1834, though the year could also be 1835 or 1836. Census records say: 1860 b.VA age 24 1870 b.KY age 37 1880 b.KY age 46 1900 b.WV age 66 (Apr 1834) 1910 b.WV age 84 For the 1900 census, Eli's daughter, Margaret Adams Watts, has listed Ohio as the place of birth for her father.
2. Death date and burial place of Eli Adams. I have been unable to locate a death certificate for Eli. Most likely he died and was buried in Wayne County, WV.
3. Marriage date and place for Eli Adams and Ellender Watts. Most likely married between 1850 and 1854 according to census records. 1900 married 50 years 1910 married 56 years
4. Eli Adams' location for the 1850 census.
5. Ellender Watts Adams' location for the 1920 census.
6. Goodwin Adams' location for the 1920 census.
7. Jackson Adams' location for the 1910 census. Viola Adkins Adams was delivering her twins, Ada and Averil, around the time the census was taken, so that could explain why the family wasn't listed.
